“Inside the churches of Christ”

I just discovered a book that looks like it might be an interesting read.  Here’s the slugline:

The Pharisees of Jesus’ day placed obstacles between lost souls and salvation in much the same way that modern day Pharisees hinder today’s salvation seekers from accepting Christ.  Inside The Churches of Christ reveals those obstacles as they are manifested throughout modern day Churches of Christ.

Author, Charles Simpson, reflects an unmistakable Pharisaical attitude toward other Christians, Christian traditions and Christian institutions typical of those he personally witnessed as a 50-year active member of the Churches of Christ.  Dozens of quotes from Church of Christ practitioners from all over the USA validate the legalisms prevalent within this group. Church of Christ readers will come away with a new perspective on the actual theology of their own brethren and the potential impact of that theology on other believers.  All Christian readers will have a better view of the non-denomination denomination and gain much insight into the Church of Christ claim of being Christ’s “one true church”.

If you are interested in ordering this book, here’s where you can do it:

If anyone would like to read it and post a review, please let me know.

  1. I just read the preview given for this book on the order page. Simpson freely admits that he bears a grudge against many people in the Churches of Christ, and that his forgiveness of these people is still in progress.

I think, for that reason, his writing of this work is very premature. He succumbs to the reasoning that many hurting individuals fall into, that we must strike back at the evil that causes us harm while we are still smarting from the wounds it has inflicted upon us.

The “beam” in Simpson’s eye seems to be the issue of forgiveness. He appears to be of willing mind to remove it, but has heart issues to overcome before he can do that. That beam makes him ineffective in removing the “motes” from the eyes of those whom he condemns with his writing.

For that reason, I won’t be ordering this book.

People with forgiveness issues should not be writing about those they have issues with nor preaching on TV either, both are tainted with a bitter root that will bias and blind them.

  3. Do order the book if you’re interested in it. The link you gave is just to a preview – if you look through you’ll see that selective pages are not there. It should be just enough to whet your appetite, or help you decide if you want the whole book or not.

  4. yep that is what happened. I’ll have to get the book.

    I didn’t think so.

  8. thanks for putting up charles book. In his very first section he says
at a very young age he knew…” it is easy to see this book is not about truth, it is just another person not wanting to be “regulated” by the matchless King Jesus. (To him be all the glory honor and praise)
Being a member of the Lord’s church is the absolute high of my life. Being controlled by his powerful word and given the keys to happiness through the wonderful unbelievable joy of keeping his words 1Joh 5:3.
So many hate to be restrained, but for us it is the joy of our life to be kept back from sinning by the light of his word. We love the commandments of Jesus that keep us from the many hurtful avenues that choke the masses into pain and horror that takes them from fruitful lives to the couches of the analyst who try and figure out their woes.
Please let me share that wonderful joy that causes me to race with time each and every day to make sure the message gets free course into this sinful world. The truth about the church of which one reads about in the Bible is an eternal message Eph 3:10-11. The masses of hell cannot put out the flame of her truth.
When you all have grown weary of trying I will still be here to help you lift your tired souls from the depths of denominationalism into the light of Jesus true love which is in his church (Eph 5:23-25) Glory and honor to the King Jesus in her Eph 3:21!
Written on Sunday morning 2:11 AM after having worked 77 hours the previous week to expose once saved always saved and Tim Whiteheart. Alive with excitement! Extreme excitement still dances in my mind from being front and center on knightshift earlier this month.
Thanks be to God for the joy of being counted worthy to suffer these little pricks against our cause. May we be ready to when the real battles arrive!

  9. Why, Mr. Robertson! That almost sounded like a testimony. I thought you weren’t supposed to do testimonies…

Regardless, and believe it or not, I don’t take issue with much of what you said, generally speaking. I still disagree with you heartily on quite a bit, but I can respect a post like this a whole lot more than your typical “defeat destroy” reactionary ramblings.

Maybe sleep deprivation is the key…

  10. Johnny Said:

So many hate to be restrained, but for us it is the joy of our life to be kept back from sinning by the light of his word.

Matthew 18:21Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times?”

22Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.[f]

23″Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. 24As he began the settlement, a man who owed him ten thousand talents[g] was brought to him. 25Since he was not able to pay, the master ordered that he and his wife and his children and all that he had be sold to repay the debt.

26″The servant fell on his knees before him. ‘Be patient with me,’ he begged, ‘and I will pay back everything.’ 27The servant’s master took pity on him, canceled the debt and let him go.

28″But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii.[h] He grabbed him and began to choke him. ‘Pay back what you owe me!’ he demanded.

29″His fellow servant fell to his knees and begged him, ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay you back.’

30″But he refused. Instead, he went off and had the man thrown into prison until he could pay the debt. 31When the other servants saw what had happened, they were greatly distressed and went and told their master everything that had happened.

32″Then the master called the servant in. ‘You wicked servant,’ he said, ‘I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to. 33Shouldn’t you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?’ 34In anger his master turned him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed.

35″This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother from your heart.”

Since you love to be restrained, would someone who constantly brings up past faults of others be considered an unmerciful servant?

If not why not? If so what is the penalty for such a person?

  11. brother is adelfos in greek meaning:

    1) a brother, whether born of the same two parents or only of the
    same father or mother
    2) having the same national ancestor, belonging to the same
    people, or countryman
    3) any fellow or man
    4) a fellow believer, united to another by the bond of affection
    5) an associate in employment or office
    6) brethren in Christ
    6a) his brothers by blood
    6b) all men
    6c) apostles
6d) Christians, as those who are exalted to the same heavenly place

  12. 15 min left in the tv show and a man calls about a woman who wants to be baptized in bassett va.
johnny says he would come to do it. not too far away.

what does he do? he puts him on hold till the end of
    the show……………….

    why tarriest thou johnny?
you tell us there should be no delay yet you have to finish the show first.

must be ok if john makes you wait.
keep up the good work john.

  13. Oh man you nailed it Lee, what was it he said he lived for again? Yet it’s second to the program hmmmmmmmm?!?

  14. I watched part of the show too and thought the same thing. Tim was blasted for putting baptism off, but then Johnny does the same thing. But, we don’t know the out-come, and I have seen Johnny willing to baptize people around 3am and other times. But, I must admit that crossed my mind too, Lee.

  15. They ask Peter “what shall we do”………

They ask Johnny “what shall we do”……answer: can you give me 15 minutes? I will put you on hold and get your information. Just after blasting Tim Whiteheart for doing the same thing. But, we don’t know the entire story….I know Johnny would have left there and went to Bassett, if really needed of him. But, it is hard to blast someone for something then do it yourself….as James Oldfield once said: “It aint no fun eating from a dirty bowl.”

  16. There is a Polish word for that. It is called “chutzpah”.

The classic case being that of the kid who murders his parents, and then throws himself on the mercy of the court on the grounds that he is an orphan.

So it’s okay for Johnny Robertson to blast another minister for saying he’ll schedule a baptism, but when it comes to his own television program Robertson makes the person wait until after the show?

What if that person was so critically ill that he/she would possibly not live past midnight? Would Robertson still make him/her wait?

Whether he realized it or not Robertson’s true priorities came to light, from the sound of it.

And I’ve been given some paid contract work because of the creativity that my April Fools stunt demonstrated. How well paid? Pretty lucrative, to put it mildly 🙂

  17. I’ve been told that Robertson attacked me on his show Sunday night for “trying to make it sound like” the “water” that Jesus refers to in John 3:5 is “birth of the flesh”. As if I was redefining it on my own, when according to Robertson it states in scripture that unless one is born “of water and spirit”, that one cannot see the Kingdom of Heaven.

My friend also told me that right as Robertson was saying this, John 3:6 was also on the screen from his Bible software, which says that “flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit” (NIV).

Okay soooo, Mr. Robertson: are you trying to tell us that according to scripture a person must be born three different ways? Because per your trying to claim that I am in error, logically you are also telling us that scripture teaches that a person must be born of flesh, water and spirit.

That’s a new one on me.

And I find it hilarious that this “Bible teacher” is once again so hellbent on taking things out of context to fit his warped and false doctrine, that he ignores verses when they are sitting smack in front of him.

  18. Have ya’ll seen this CoC video.

Have you ever seen a logical fallacy festival??? Well here it is.

I am thinking about doing a rebuttal video,,, anyone interested in getting involved??? Email me at damonw_25@yahoo.com
