A Pause in the Discussion…

I want to take a break from our discussion to let everyone know about a tragic accident that happened in the last day to a very Godly man and his family.

The 5-year-old daughter of Grammy-winning Christian music star Steven Curtis Chapman was struck and killed Wednesday by a sport utility vehicle driven by her brother, authorities said.

The girl, Maria Sue, was hit in the driveway of the family’s home Wednesday afternoon by a Toyota Land Cruiser driven by her teenage brother, said Laura McPherson, a spokeswoman for the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

The brother, whose name and exact age weren’t available, apparently did not see the girl, McPherson said. No charges are expected.

“It looks like a tragic accident,” she said.

Several family members witnessed the accident, which happened in Williamson County just south of Nashville. The girl died later at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, hospital spokeswoman Laurie Holloway said.

In a statement, Velvet Kelm, a publicist for Chapman, said Maria was the Chapmans’ youngest daughter.

Let’s be praying for Chapman and his family, and especially for the teenage son who was driving the SUV.  This is one of those senseless tragedies that rocks you to the core, especially if you are a parent of small children.

And, I’m sorry that I have to write this – but this story was not put on the blog as a discussion instigator.  It is a request for prayer, no matter what side of the fence you are on in our arguments.  I must insist that nobody use this story as a tool for promoting a particular doctrinal stance.

It’s a request for prayer only.

Thanks, Nathan

  1. I heard about it last night and it just broke my heart. What a terrible tragedy-I cannot even imagine what they are going through, especially what that young man is going through. I truly pray the God of ALL peace and comfort will pour out His love, peace, encouragement, and comfort on them during this difficult time.

May we all truly remember the important things in life, and appreciate our loved ones anymore. We never know how short our time on earth will be, so I pray that we really live each day to the fullest and bring all the glory to God.

  2. My stomach literally went into a million knots hearing of this news. Having three children of my own, it’s heart-breaking to think of losing one and I can’t imagine the pain that their son is now suffering having been the cause of this accident. What a painful situation all the way around. May God surround them with His grace and the comfort that only He can provide.

  3. O merciful God, whose wisdom is beyond our understanding, deal graciously with the Chapman family in their grief. Surround them with your love, that they may not be overwhelmed by their loss, but have confidence in your goodness and strength to meet the days to come, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

“He will swallow up death forever, And the Lord God will wipe away tears from all faces;” Isaiah 25:8
