Many of you have been waiting for me to respond regarding the copycat blog. I’ve been holding off to see what Randy was going to do, and it looks like Randy has fallen for their garbage. So, I have a message to everyone who has been discussing issues on this blog, and it’s about the copycat.
Those of us who call ourselves Christians (whether you are in a church that has “Church of Christ” in the title, or if you are in another Christian tradition) have an obligation in the way that we discuss and debate issues.
It doesn’t matter if you think you are right and everyone else is wrong, or if you think everyone has a point and the only ones who are wrong are the ones who think they are the only ones who are right. That obligation includes that we operate with honesty in the way we discuss and debate. Scripture is pretty clear about this sort of expectation. Let me give you a little sampling:
“A wicked doer giveth heed to false lips; [and] a liar giveth ear to a naughty tongue.” Proverbs 17:4
“I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, [and] giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and [for] all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.” 1 Tim 2:1-2
“Ye are of [your] father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh on his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.” John 8:44
“But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.” Revelations 21:8
“But nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who does what is detestable or false, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s book of life.” Revelations 21:27
And yet, over the past few days, I’ve seen someone who professes to be Christian (maybe more than one?) acting in a profoundly dishonest manner. This person is telling lies about other people, and even if a person thinks they are fighting for the side of Truth, it is not biblical to lie to win that fight.
Show me one example where Christ lied to get ahead in a discussion. You can’t. Neither have I lied on this blog, on Topix, on churchesofchrist.wordpress.com, or in private emails – as I’ve been pretty brazenly accused of doing. I have been aloof, admittedly, and with good reason, but I’ve not lied. Anyone who has been to the copycat blog can see the kind of dishonesty I am up against, and understand why I would be aloof.
Who is the copycat? I have no idea. And I’m not going to do the copycat the honor of mentioning him any more specifically here except to say that he should really examine his actions in light of what he professes to believe. I don’t say this as a taunt. I’m not trying to score points. I’m just suggesting that you be very careful about the way you go about this whole thing, lest you “gain the world but lose your soul.” Mark 8:36
P.S. You can find the copycat’s link over on Randy’s blog. I’m not going to sully my page by posting it here. And if you go and read it, just think logically about what he’s up to. And remember Jesus himself said, “And if a kingdom be divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.” (Mark 2:34)
